A forthcoming article by Rachael Knight<\/a>, Director of Namati\u2019s Community Land Protection Program<\/a>, and co-author Marianna Bicchieri, Chief Technical Advisor on land and gender at the Food and Agricultural Organization<\/a>, points to the importance of addressing women\u2019s land rights at the community-level, rather than solely through individual land titling. Their publication, presented at the 2014 World Bank Conference on Land and Poverty, argues that in contexts where granting individual land titles to women runs counter to local customary legal and social paradigms, it is more effective and sustainable to support communities to create local mechanisms that protect women\u2019s land and natural resources rights, rather than attempting to dismantle the existing customary land rights system.<\/p>\n
