{"id":56387,"date":"2016-12-13T17:40:01","date_gmt":"2016-12-13T21:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/namati.org\/?post_type=namati_stories&#038;p=56387"},"modified":"2019-08-30T16:30:28","modified_gmt":"2019-08-30T20:30:28","slug":"privacy-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/namati.org\/news-stories\/privacy-patients\/","title":{"rendered":"Privacy for Patients","gt_translate_keys":[{"key":"rendered","format":"text"}]},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our health advocate Lina, who works in a busy district hospital,\u00a0received a complaint from a group of HIV patients\u00a0regarding\u00a0the lack of privacy in the\u00a0hospital\u00a0pharmacy. \u00a0Large numbers of patients at\u00a0the were crowding around the\u00a0windows where prescriptions are disbursed, making it easy for others to see which medicines\u00a0each\u00a0patient had been given.\u00a0 A number of HIV patients reportedly abandoned treatment as a result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We didn&#8217;t feel secure, and we were afraid to go take our medicines because everyone who was waiting at the pharmacy pick-up window could see.\u00a0 If they saw that the person was receiving antiretrovirals, they would go and tell people in the community the person&#8217;s HIV status&#8230; when I would go out in the street people would always point at me, and they would say, &#8216;She has AIDS!'&#8221; &#8212;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria Zimila, village health committee member<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lina, along with several\u00a0members of the village health committee, approached the head of the health facility, who agreed that this was a violation of patients&#8217; right to privacy.\u00a0 Together they went to\u00a0speak with district health\u00a0leadership, who referred them to provincial\u00a0authorities, given that the solution would\u00a0require funds for improvements to\u00a0infrastructure (the\u00a0district did not have flexible funds available).\u00a0 Wooden dividers were constructed and installed in\u00a0the\u00a0pharmacy to separate the pharmacy windows from view.\u00a0 Patients now wait in line and approach the two pharmacy windows one by one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Other people are no longer permitted in the pharmacy window.
